"Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!" The White Rabbit's watch is one of the best-known objects in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the Lewis Carroll novel published in 1865 and now in the public domain. Our chart turns it into a round golden watch with its hands at a quarter to three.
The design is 14 stitches wide and worked in single crochet, one colour per square. Fine cotton and a 2.5 mm hook give a piece of about six centimetres, small enough for a keyring or a brooch.
Work the white face first, row by row, then embroider the ring at the top if you would rather avoid tiny isolated patches of yellow.
