Geometric motifs are the ideal way into tapestry crochet: the chart reads at a glance and any mistake shows straight away. This concentric diamond alternates plum purple, sugar pink and buttercup yellow on an ecru background.
The square is 15 stitches by 15 rows. In aran wool with a 5 mm hook it reaches about fifteen centimetres, so four squares joined together cover a thirty-centimetre cushion.
For a bolder look, swap the colours on every other square before joining them. The motif stays the same, but the cushion starts to look like a tiled floor.
