The acorn is the autumn motif par excellence: an orange nut, a brown cap and a short stalk. On a sky blue background it stands out clearly and makes a pretty coaster for woodland-walk season.
The chart is 14 stitches wide and 16 rows high, about 8 cm by 10 cm in DK cotton with a 3.5 mm hook. It uses 4 colours, background included. Begin with the stalk at the top and work down. The cap is brown with small black dots, which I work with separate strands to avoid a long float. Keep the orange yarn behind the work once you reach the nut.
Read the chart from bottom to top, one row going out and one coming back, in single crochet (US). A round of single crochet around the square will finish the coaster neatly.
