The black flag with a skull and crossbones is a staple of pirate parties. Our chart reproduces it in just two colours: a white skull with black eye sockets, a few teeth and two crossed bones.
The flag is 16 stitches by 18 rows. Black against white is unforgiving: keep an even tension and carry the white yarn on the wrong side without pulling it too tight.
Sewn onto a stick it becomes a real flag for a costume; on a bag or a den, it announces a crew. A border of black single crochet stops the edges from curling.
